The snipe's reputation for speed and evasiveness was such that it gave rise to the word ‘sniper’, and its appearance as a stickpin subject reflects the strong tradition of game bird jewellery worn by the shooting fraternity of the period. The body is set throughout with old-cut diamonds totalling an estimated 0.23 carats, with a small cabochon ruby for the eye. The silver-on-gold construction is characteristic of the Edwardian period, when silver was the preferred setting metal for diamonds. Unhallmarked; tests as silver and 18ct gold.
