A rare and remarkably complete early Victorian memorial locket in 15ct gold, c.1860, of exceptional quality and condition. The front is centrally set with a cross motif formed of banded agate beads — the agate a stone long associated with protection and remembrance — while the reverse bears an enamel cartouche and engraved initials, personalising the piece to its original owner. Inside, both an original photograph and a lock of hair are preserved, making this one of the most intact examples of Victorian memorial jewellery one is likely to encounter. The locket retains all the intimacy and sentiment of the tradition it represents, and is in a condition that speaks to the care with which it has been kept across more than 160 years.
