A fine pair of 18ct gold cufflinks by Deakin & Francis, Birmingham hallmarked c.1990, with oval faces inlaid with alternating panels of onyx and mother of pearl. Deakin & Francis, established in Birmingham in 1786, is the oldest jewellery house in the city and one of the most distinguished names in British cufflink making — the firm has been producing cufflinks and accessories from its Hylton Street premises for over two centuries, and its hallmark is a reliable indicator of quality and craftsmanship. The alternating onyx and mother of pearl inlay — the deep, matte black of the onyx against the soft, iridescent lustre of the mother of pearl — is a combination that has been a staple of formal men's jewellery for good reason: it is restrained, elegant, and works equally well with black tie and a well-cut suit.
