A platinum ring in the Art Deco Revival style, centred on a 0.55-carat Asscher-cut diamond within a target design of concentric rows: a ring of calibré-cut sapphires immediately surrounding the centre stone, then an outer ring of brilliant-cut diamonds, the whole framed by diamond-set shoulders leading to a triple wire shank. The target motif — concentric circles of alternating stones radiating outward from the centre — is one of the most characteristic and graphic of all Art Deco design devices, its geometric precision and symmetry entirely in keeping with the movement's aesthetic.
The Asscher cut, developed in 1902 by the Amsterdam diamond cutter Joseph Asscher, is a square step-cut with cropped corners and deep, open facets that produce a distinctive hall-of-mirrors effect — long parallel flashes of light rather than the continuous sparkle of a brilliant cut. It is a cut with a strong period association with Art Deco, its geometric form and the clarity of its facets suiting the movement's preference for precision and structure. The calibré-cut sapphires — each individually shaped to follow the curve of the setting — provide the colour contrast that gives the ring its depth, the blue of the sapphires framing the diamond centre and separating it from the outer ring of brilliant-cut stones.
