A bold and exceptional French dress ring in 18ct gold, c.1960, centred on a sugarloaf lapis lazuli of 23.39 carats — measuring 17 × 14 × 13mm — in a rub-over gold setting, with thirty brilliant-cut diamonds totalling an estimated 2.1 carats set in claw settings around the outer edge and graduating asymmetrically down the shoulders. The sugarloaf cut — a high, steeply domed cabochon that rises dramatically from its setting — gives the lapis lazuli a sculptural presence that a flatter stone could not achieve, the depth of the dome intensifying the colour and allowing the stone to be seen from every angle. The asymmetric graduation of the diamonds down the shoulders is a deliberate and sophisticated design choice, giving the ring a dynamic, directional quality that distinguishes it from a conventional symmetrical dress ring.
