The design of this ring is a spider web — radiating lines of brilliant-cut diamonds extending from the centre, the spaces between filled with calibré-cut sapphires individually shaped to fit precisely within their allocated sections. The web is a geometric motif with deep roots in Art Deco design, its radiating symmetry and precise construction entirely in keeping with the movement's celebration of pattern, order, and the decorative possibilities of contrasting materials. Here the cool blue of the sapphires and the white brilliance of the diamonds work together across the surface of the ring to create something that rewards close attention.
Calibré cutting — the practice of shaping each stone individually to fit a defined space within the setting — is one of the most demanding techniques in gem setting, requiring each sapphire to be cut to follow the geometry of the web precisely. The seamless fit of stone against stone, with no metal visible between them, is the mark of skilled craftsmanship and the quality that distinguishes a well-made calibré-set piece from a merely competent one. Estimated total sapphire weight 1.3 carats; estimated total diamond weight 0.8 carats.
Made in 18ct white gold in the Art Deco Revival style, late 20th century. Hallmarked 750 (18ct gold). Face dimensions 1.5 × 1.5cm. Ring size N (UK).
