A striking and characterful French stickpin in 18ct gold, c.1880, modelled as a devil — a motif that flourished in the jewellery and decorative arts of the Belle Époque, when the bohemian circles of Montmartre and the cabaret culture of the Chat Noir embraced diabolical imagery as a symbol of wit, irreverence, and creative freedom. The devil stickpin was worn as a knowing provocation, a small act of rebellion against Victorian propriety that was entirely in keeping with the spirit of the age. At 5.2g and 1.5 × 1.1cm the modelling has real presence and detail. Hallmarked with French assay marks for 18ct gold and a maker's mark. Pin length 7cm.
