A rare and finely modelled Edwardian sporting stickpin in silver on 18ct gold, formed as a snipe — the long-billed wading bird that was among the most prized and challenging quarry in the Victorian and Edwardian sporting calendar. The snipe's reputation for speed and evasiveness was such that it gave rise to the word ‘sniper’, and its appearance as a stickpin subject reflects the strong tradition of game bird jewellery worn by the shooting fraternity of the period. The body is set throughout with old-cut diamonds totalling an estimated 0.23 carats, with a small cabochon ruby for the eye. The silver-on-gold construction is characteristic of the Edwardian period, when silver was the preferred setting metal for diamonds. Unhallmarked; tests as silver and 18ct gold.
