A fine pair of Regency earrings in 18ct gold, c.1830–1840, each set with an octagonal faceted garnet in a closed-back mount. The closed-back setting — characteristic of the finest jewellery of the Regency and early Victorian periods — encloses the back of the stone in gold foil, intensifying the depth and richness of the garnet's colour in a way that open settings cannot replicate. The result is a deep, velvety red that is quite different from the same stone in a modern mount. At 1.8 × 1.9cm these are a confident size, with the bold, unfussy elegance that defines Regency jewellery at its best. Fitted with post and scroll fittings. Tests as 18ct gold.
