A rare and deeply charming pair of Victorian drop earrings in 18ct gold, c.1850, combining three distinct elements in a composition of considerable wit and sentiment. The tops are carved in the form of pansies — from the French pensée, meaning thought — a flower that carried a specific Victorian meaning: "you are in my thoughts." Beneath the pansies hang long, well-matched cowrie shells, prized in the 19th century for their exotic provenance and smooth, lustrous surface. At the base, tapered gold arrowhead motifs articulate freely, adding movement and a final flourish. At 6cm in length these are earrings of real drama and narrative depth. Tests as 18ct gold.
