A magnificent and dramatic Victorian sword brooch, dating to circa 1880 and set in silver on 15ct gold. The handle and blade are set throughout with 69 old cut diamonds of an estimated 2.4 carats in total — a density of stones that gives the brooch a continuous, glittering brilliance along its entire 11cm length. The pommel is set with a natural pearl of 6.6–7mm, its lustrous white providing a refined counterpoint to the diamond-set blade. The sword brooch was one of the most popular and enduring motifs of the Victorian era, worn by both men and women as a bold lapel accessory, and an example of this scale and diamond weight is a particularly fine one.
A statement piece of antique jewellery with genuine presence — at 11cm in length and with 69 old cut diamonds, this is a sword brooch that commands attention on a lapel or a gown.
