The centre stone is a natural fancy yellow diamond of 0.72 carats in a cushion cut — a warm, saturated yellow that is the result of nitrogen atoms present during the diamond's formation deep within the earth. Natural fancy yellow diamonds are significantly rarer than white diamonds: while colourless stones are graded for the absence of colour, fancy yellows are prized for the intensity and saturation of their colour, and a stone of this depth of hue represents a meaningful rarity. The cushion cut, with its rounded corners and larger facets, is particularly well suited to coloured diamonds, its broad table allowing the full richness of the yellow to be appreciated.
The ring is set in platinum, the cool, dense white of the metal providing a neutral ground that allows the yellow of the centre stone to read with maximum intensity. The three-stone format — centre flanked by two matching cushion-cut white diamonds of 0.23 carats each — is one of the most enduring engagement ring designs, traditionally understood to represent the past, present, and future of a relationship. Each of the three principal stones is encircled by a halo of precisely matched brilliant-cut diamonds, and further brilliant-cut diamonds adorn the shoulders.
