A superb and exceptionally well-preserved Victorian mourning locket in 18ct gold, c.1850, of outstanding quality for its age. One face bears the initials AP rendered in fine black enamel — the traditional colour of mourning — while the other is decorated with a natural pearl laurel leaf and enamel design, the laurel a classical symbol of remembrance and honour. Inside, the original photograph of the lady being mourned and a lock of her hair remain intact, making this a piece of rare completeness and intimacy. At 4 × 3.5cm and 19.1g it is a locket of considerable presence. Pieces such as this carry a weight of personal history that no new jewellery can replicate — and the quality of the enamel work and goldsmithing here is exceptional. Tests as 18ct gold.
