A superb Victorian reverse intaglio crystal pendant, dating to circa 1880 — and one of the finest examples of Essex crystal we have had the privilege of offering. The subject is a hummingbird resting upon a perch, depicted with extraordinary naturalistic detail in the reverse intaglio technique: the image is carved into the flat underside of a domed crystal, then backed to bring the three-dimensional scene to life when viewed from the front. The crystal is bezel set in a 15ct yellow gold frame with foliate engraved detailing to the surround — a beautifully considered mount that complements the organic subject matter.

Essex crystal is one of the most collectable and technically demanding of all Victorian jewellery forms, and a hummingbird subject of this quality and condition is genuinely rare. A piece for the serious collector of antique jewellery.
