A fine example of one of the most enduring formats in Victorian gentlemen's jewellery — the eagle claw stickpin, here in 18ct gold, c.1890, the talon clutching a lustrous saltwater pearl between its talons. The claw-and-pearl was among the most popular stickpin designs of the Victorian and Edwardian periods, worn by gentlemen of all stations as a mark of quiet distinction. The appeal is immediate and timeless: the contrast of the sharp, worked gold of the claw against the smooth, organic lustre of the pearl is as effective today as it was 130 years ago. The modelling of the talon is accomplished, the individual scales and joints rendered with care. Tests as 18ct gold. Head 2 × 1cm; pin length 6.5cm.
