The design of this ring is built on the contrast between two cuts: a central row of baguette-cut diamonds graduating in size from the centre outward, flanked on either side by rows of uniform brilliant-cut diamonds. The baguette — a rectangular step-cut with long, open facets — produces a clean, architectural line of light; the brilliant cut, with its 57 or 58 facets optimised for maximum sparkle, produces a very different quality of brilliance. Set side by side, the two cuts create a ring that is at once structured and scintillating, the calm geometry of the baguettes anchoring the fire of the brilliants.

At 5.7 carats total diamond weight and 1.1cm wide, this is a ring of considerable presence — broad enough to make a statement across the finger without overwhelming the hand. The mount is 18ct yellow gold, the warmth of the metal providing a rich ground for the diamonds. Circa 1980–90, a period when bold, high-diamond-weight dress rings of this kind were at the height of fashion.
