A rare and finely modelled stickpin in 14ct gold, c.1920, formed as a three-dimensional chimera — the composite mythological creature of Greek antiquity, traditionally depicted with a lion's head, goat's body and serpent's tail, and long associated in the decorative arts with guardianship and the supernatural. The chimera was a recurring motif in French goldsmithing from the Renaissance onwards, and its appearance in jewellery of the early 20th century reflects the continued fascination with classical mythology that ran alongside the more fashionable Egyptian and Art Deco influences of the period. The ruby eyes bring the creature to life, and the scale-like detailing of the tail is rendered with considerable care and precision. At 1.7 × 1.9cm and 4.6g this is a stickpin of real presence.
