A charming and finely made French Art Nouveau stickpin in 18ct gold, c.1880, depicting a frog and dragonfly in a naturalistic composition. Both creatures were among the most beloved subjects in Art Nouveau jewellery — the movement's deep engagement with the forms of the natural world found its most expressive outlet in the insects, amphibians, and flora of the French countryside, and the combination of frog and dragonfly on a single piece is an unusual and appealing pairing. The dragonfly in particular was a signature motif of the great French Art Nouveau jewellers, its iridescent wings lending themselves naturally to enamel work and plique-à-jour. In pristine condition.
