A substantial and well-made 9ct gold charm in the form of a Chinese junk, Birmingham hallmarked 1970. The Chinese junk — the distinctive flat-bottomed sailing vessel with its characteristic battened sails, used for centuries across the South China Sea and the waters of the Far East — was a popular charm subject in the 1960s and 1970s, when travel to Asia was becoming more accessible and the imagery of the Orient held a particular fascination for British jewellery buyers. At 4g and 2.4 × 2.2cm this is a charm of real weight and presence, the detail of the rigging and hull rendered with care. Wearable on a charm bracelet or on a chain as a pendant. Birmingham hallmarked 9ct gold, 1970.
